How Rachel connects fruit picking to climate action
This fabulous event is back by popular request! Not Far From the Tree is hosting a FREE native tree giveaway on Saturday, June 6th from 8 am to 12 pm during Evergreen’s Saturday farmers’ market!
The Neighborhood Tree Giveaway Program supports the City of Toronto’s goal of reaching a 40% tree canopy cover by 2050. The City of Toronto provides all trees, which are native to Toronto’s seed zone and suited for our urban environment.
A well-cared-for native tree is an amazing asset to the community for many years to come, and more edible trees increase our city’s resilience and sustainability. Together we can care for Toronto’s tree canopy and grow our urban orchard!
EDIT: Our orders are now closed. Thank you so much for your interest!
You can pick up your trees on Saturday, June 6th from 8 am to 12 pm at Evergreen Brick Works (we’ll send a reminder email a few days before).
Please ensure you are prepared to transport your trees, and arrive on time, as we are not able to deliver or “hold” the trees.
You will receive your tree(s), an information sheet on your selected species, as well as a small paper bag of mulch to use after you plant it on your property.
See our information sheet for Elderberry & Serviceberry for planting and care information.
When we hosted similar giveaways in the past, our community overwhelmingly told us that they wanted only edible native shrubs – which makes sense, considering what we do as a fruit picking group! For more giveaways by other organizations and the City of Toronto, please visit their page here.
The trees are in 1-2 gallon pots and are about 1-2 feet tall. See photo below for rough estimate:

No, unfortunately, we will not be able to hold or deliver trees. If you need to send someone to pick up your trees for you, that is fine, as long as they can provide your full name and email or phone number to us.
There are many different ways to get to the Brick Works. We suggest using sustainable forms of transportation, like biking, walking or public transportation, when you can. The Evergreen Shuttle Bus departs every 30 to 45 minutes from Broadview Station, and there are three steps to get into the shuttle bus. If you’re coming by car, there’s also a limited amount of paid parking on site.
We will be at the entrance to Brick Works off of the West Parking Lot, close to the Bike Share Toronto station (click here for the Google Map coordinates). Look for our big orange tent!
