How Rachel connects fruit picking to climate action
At the time, it looked a lot like a traditional membership, complete with discounts to local shops and early access to workshops. It was a way to thank community for support while we built the infrastructure for our fruit-picking portal.
As we look toward the future, we’ve realized that the word “membership fee” no longer fits the heart of what we do! While “membership fees” served us well for a time, we have found the name to carry a transactional weight. It could sound like a gym membership or subscription service, where one gives X to get Y, or a fee-for-service, like hiring an arborist. But we aren’t a service, we are a community-led movement! Our work isn’t about a transaction; it’s about shared abundance and reciprocity.
These contributions go directly back into the Fruit Picking Program, supporting the tools and coordination required for us to share thousands of pounds of fruit every season. See our financial breakdowns in our impact reports.
Upon seasonal registration in the Fruit Picking Portal, we recommend contribution amounts at the following:
Shares are gathered for the season by September 15. Contributions made after September 15 carry over as contributions for the following year’s season.
Equity means that we believe in breaking down financial barriers that stand in the way of nourishing food, so we always waive shares for anyone who asks, no questions asked. We especially encourage Indigenous community members and Youth to utilize this option. Our goal is to ensure the joy of the harvest is accessible to those who have been systemically excluded, or are just beginning their journey as community stewards. If you’d like your share waived, reach out to us at picks@notfarfromthetree.org and we’ll set you up.
