Celebrating CFTO: A Shared Commitment to Ending Food Scarcity in Toronto
Happy three years to Community Fridges Toronto (CFTO)! We think this is a great opportunity to recognize the incredible impact this organization has had on our city.
CFTO was founded on the belief that access to food is a right, not a privilege. Through the collective effort of volunteers across the city, they’ve built a network of community refrigerators, providing 24/7 access to food for everyone, with no questions asked.
MUTUAL AID PRINCIPALS
- Mutual aid projects work to meet survival needs and build shared understanding about why people do not have what they need.
- Mutual aid projects mobilize people, expand solidarity, and build movements.
- Mutual aid projects are participatory, solving problems through collective action rather than waiting for saviours.
CFTO stands out for meeting survival needs while fostering a shared understanding of the systemic issues that cause food insecurity. By placing fridges in neighborhoods throughout Toronto, CFTO ensures that anyone can take what they need or leave what they can, enabling a culture of respect, understanding, and solidarity.
Not Far From the Tree is proud to collaborate with CFTO in this essential work within Toronto. NFFTT is rooted in the power of community and the importance of urban agriculture. Through our partnership we’ve been able to contribute to the fight against food scarcity in the city. By working together with CFTO, we’re not just reducing food waste, but we’re also ensuring that fresh, healthy produce makes its way into the hands of those who need it most.
Both CFTO and NFFTT understand that the fight against food scarcity is not just about providing food—it’s about building movements and creating lasting change. As CFTO celebrates this anniversary, we look forward to continuing our partnership and strengthening our collective impact. Together, we’re creating a city where everyone has access to the nourishment they need, and where food is a symbol of community, not scarcity.
Congratulations, CFTO, on all that you’ve achieved. Here’s to many more years of mutual aid, solidarity, and collective action in the fight against food insecurity in Toronto.
