Trees are blooming in full force. Your sinuses may be worn out, but we’re energized for a full season of fruit ahead. We’re anticipating lots of fruit picks, and need you to join our Supreme Gleaner team. Supreme Gleaners take the next step from fruit picking to leading our fruit picking teams. They transport equipment to the pick, oversee volunteers during the fruit pick, and deliver fruit to one of our partner agencies across the city. Their hard work and dedication is the backbone of our program. And thanks to their leadership, last year we were able to harvest 12,159 pounds of fruit.
This year our goal is to double our number of Supreme Gleaners!
We’re motivated to train a new generation of pick leaders, and add 75 new folks to our all-star Supreme Gleaner Team. We want to connect with fruit lovers all across the city, so we can pick and share more fruit in Toronto than ever before. Will you help us? If you’re a natural leader who loves fruit and meeting new people, you’re perfect for the job. Read on below to learn more and apply!
Here’s what you need to know:
Qualifications: We’re looking for folks that are friendly and comfortable in a leadership role. You’re reliable, responsible and comfortable riding a bike or driving in the city.
Responsibilities: Supreme Gleaners lead a minimum of four fruit picks during Toronto’s fruit harvest season from June to October. The fruit picks last up to two hours each, and the Supreme Gleaner shift is 3.5 to 4 hours. For each pick you’ll:
- pick up equipment from a neighbourhood storage hub and a cargo bike if you’re using it;
- make your way to a fruit tree within the same neighbourhood;
- greet volunteers and lead the pick, keeping things friendly and safe; and
- deliver fruit to a nearby partner agency and return equipment to the storage hub.
Please note that while we’re committed to environmental sustainability and using bikes as our main mode of transport, we also understand that not everyone is comfortable navigating the streets of Toronto in a cargo bike. As an alternative, Supreme Gleaners are welcome to use their own car to pick up equipment and deliver fruit to our partner agencies.
Once you’ve registered, our Program Coordinator Rahul Mehta will be in touch with an invitation to our upcoming training sessions in June. Once you’ve attended the training, you’ll be all set to get picking in our urban orchard!
